About Wykeham Mature Plants

This is a nursery on a grand scale.  Situated in an impressive 5 acre walled garden, it extends to a further 100 acres.  Wykeham Mature Plants is part of the vast Dawnay Estates, which covers 10,000 acres near Scarborough and the beautiful North York Moors. The estate offers a range of enterprises in addition to the nursery, such as shooting and fishing, farming, forestry, a caravan park and a Farmer’s Market. The land includes Danby Moors, a breeding area for ground nesting birds. In addition to the huge area of land, the estate also maintains over 50 listed buildings.

The nursery was set up in 1975 by the late 11th Viscount Downe, to be the leading wholesale tree supplier in Yorkshire. The nursery has developed over the years and now supplies over 1000 varieties of shrubs and trees to garden and landscape designers, wholesale, and the public. The nursery is located on the Wykeham Estate, close to Wykeham Abbey, the ancestral home of the Dawnay family for over 350 years.

A visit to Wykeham Mature Plants is a delight. The staff offer a warm welcome to visitors, where you can discuss your planting needs in the rather attractive and comfortable offices, located in the Bothy within the walled garden.

The trees and shrubs are grown here for up to 16 years, so you have a fantastic choice of some impressive mature specimens. These plants aren’t just grown here, they are lovingly nurtured. Martin and his team will only sell you plants that they know are suitable for your situation and will receive the care and attention that these fine specimens deserve. It’s not unusual for staff to pop in and check that their much loved trees and shrubs are being cared for by their new owners.

The nursery offers a site visit, planting and after care service, so you can let the experts take care of all your needs. They even offer a rental service of pot specimens, ideal for that special occasion such as weddings and birthdays.

One of the most popular lines is the instant hedging, which can transform a garden instantly. Not only will it provide screening but also add interest which normally takes years to achieve. There is a display of popular hedging plants to help you make the right choice for your garden.

Easy to find, only 15 minutes from Scarborough, an hour from Thirsk and York, and an hour and a half from Harrogate and Leeds. The attractive market towns of Pickering and Helmsley are only a short drive away, so too is the wild beauty of the North Yorkshire Moors.

From the A170 follow the signs towards Scarborough. On entering the village of Wykeham, you will see a sign to the right for Wykeham Mature Plants. Follow the lane for about 100 yards, and then take a left turn through the ornate metal gates. The walled garden is on your right.
